The Marathon Weekend Itinerary by SeaLink:

Heading to Kangaroo Island August for the KI Marathon? Whether you’re racing or cheering from the sidelines, it’s the perfect excuse to turn marathon weekend into a memorable mini holiday. With rugged coastlines, native wildlife, cosy local eats and hidden gems to uncover, this 4-day itinerary will help you make the most of your time on South Australia’s wild and wonderful island.

Day One

Morning:

Catch an early SeaLink ferry from Cape Jervis and enjoy the scenic 45-minute crossing to Penneshaw. Keep an eye out for seabirds or dolphins as the mainland slips behind you and the island rises on the horizon. If you’ve driven over, you’ll be well-placed to explore. Otherwise, hire a car at the terminal - it’s the best way to get around the island.

If you prefer not to drive, SeaLink also offers return coach transfers from Adelaide direct to the ferry terminal.

Once you arrive in Penneshaw, ease into island time with a stroll around the town, a coffee at Millie Mae’s Pantry, or a short walk along the clifftop trail. If you’ve brought your own vehicle, take the coastal route to Kingscote or American River and enjoy the shifting scenery along the way. These towns make excellent bases for marathon weekend, offering a variety of accommodation and dining options with easy access to Flinders Chase.

Afternoon:

In the afternoon, consider a relaxed visit to Island Beehive to sample Ligurian honey and learn about the island’s unique bee population. If the weather’s kind, a short detour to Pennington Bay offers a dose of salty air and a dramatic coastal lookout—perfect for clearing the mind before race day.

Evening:

Settle in for a hearty meal at Zone Restaurant in Kingscote or the warm hospitality of Reflections Restaurant in American River, where local seafood and produce take centre stage.

Day Two

With the big day looming, today is a chance to explore Kangaroo Island at a gentler pace. For those running the marathon, this is the day for a light stretch, good food, and minimal stress. For everyone else, it’s a prime opportunity to dive into the island’s natural wonders and wildlife.

Morning:

Start your day at Seal Bay Conservation Park, where guided tours allow you to walk on the beach just metres from Australian sea lions. It’s a rare and humbling experience that offers a real sense of place. From there, you might venture to Emu Bay for a stroll or drive along the long white beach or explore Pelican Lagoon and the Cannery Trail near American River a flat and scenic walk, perfect for a light pre-race leg stretch with views over the lagoon.

Afternoon:

Lunch can be a relaxed affair - head to Cactus Café in Kingscote for fresh, seasonal fare, or try the famous Whiting burger at Vivonne Bay General Store. After lunch, spend a few quiet hours back at your accommodation or take a short drive to Stokes Bay for one of the island’s most talked-about experiences: a hidden beach accessed through a rock tunnel, crowned Australia’s Best Beach in 2023.

Evening:

With the race on the horizon, spend your evening preparing and relaxing. Lay out your gear, check your travel plans for race morning, and enjoy a quiet night. If you're looking for an early dinner option, Amadio Wines Cellar Door & Kitchen in Kingscote offers a cosy atmosphere and a great local drop to toast the night before.

Race Day

Morning:

It’s race day! Head to Flinders Chase National Park for the start of the KI Marathon—one of the world’s most scenic races, taking in rugged coastlines, native bushland and limestone cliffs. Whether you're running or spectating, soak in the breathtaking beauty of the park.

For those not participating, Flinders Chase is still a spectacular place to spend the day. The park has well-maintained boardwalks and viewing platforms, making it accessible for spectators to explore while runners make their way through the course. Keep an eye out for echidnas, wallabies and other wildlife along the way.

Afternoon:

After the finish line, unwind with a laid-back lunch at the nearby Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary Café or pack a picnic to enjoy along one of the scenic spots. For those not racing, the sanctuary itself is a lovely way to spend the morning spotting koalas, kangaroos and birdlife.

Evening:

Celebrate the day’s achievements by joining the Official Post Race Party at Kangaroo Island Brewery from 3-6pm. If you need to put the feet up instead, there's no shortage of choices for a special dinner - many local venues offer seasonal menus focused on local produce. Toast to the day’s effort, whether you ran, cheered or snapped photos all day.

Day Four

Morning:

Before you head home, squeeze in a few last island delights. Stop in at Clifford’s Honey Farm to sample their famous honey ice cream and pick up a few jars to take home. If you’re passing through Kingscote, drop into Kangaroo Island Spirits for gin tasting (and take-home bottles).

Afternoon:

Drive back to Penneshaw and just enjoy a final coastal walk and coffee at Fat Beagle Coffee Shop before boarding the return SeaLink ferry.
